T-Mobile experienced an outage throughout New York on Tuesday that left customers flocking to the carrier’s outlets. Store employees expressed sympathy but were unable to say when the problem would be fixed. Many phones returned to service by early evening, but T-Mobile service operators contacted in the early evening said there were still outages. A sign posted on one Chelsea neighborhood T-Mobile outlet indicated the outage, prompting one customer to ask to use the store’s landline (the employee said ‘yes.’) The outage began after 9 a.m., according to the employee, and stretched intermittently until at least late afternoon. Customers found themselves without voice, and in some cases data service (for e-mail, Web surfing, text messaging and so on).
T-Mobile has suffered other outages in recent years and months: in 2005 its Sidekicks lost data capability due to a partner’s mishaps; in August, there was an East Coast data outage, as well as other outages in New York and other regions.
