Panel Discusses The Next President and New Media

NYConvergence ORIGINAL

In a New York: Media Information Exchange Group (NY:MIEG) panel moderated by Newsday's Ellis Henican at the Samsung Experience in The Time Warner Center, Brian Reich (EchoDitto), Amanda Michel (Off the Bus), Rachel Sterne (NY-based Ground Report) and Michael Oreskes (Associated Press) discussed how the next presidential adminstration will use new media to communicate and more importantly, who is the media now.

Reich started the panel off by mentioning how the Obama campaign's use of new media is an offshoot of Howard Dean's campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.  Michel noted that the distinction between citizens and journalists has become blurry, noting that she regards journalists as "ones who can commit random acts of journalism."  Sterne picked up on that theme, talking about how citizen journalists can add an extra amount of emotion to a story.  Oreskes added that new media is linking citizenship and government together in a way that it hasn't been for a while.  Reich does think that this amount of participation needs to be channeled while Rachel suggested an appeal needs to be made to the 46% of the country which didn't vote for Obama.
