The Brewer v. The Bloomberg Open Data Plan

Gale Brewer, the city councilwoman who recently announced her initiative for a bill to open all of the city's data to programmers, was surprised when Mayor Bloomberg made his recent announcement about the Big Apps contest, which is part of his sweeping NYCMedia 2020 plan for the city.  The contest is similar to Brewer's plan as it is inviting software developers to create apps out of data sets the city will make available to them.

The difference between the contest is while Brewer is looking to open up all city data to local programmers, the Big Apps contest will make 90 data sets available.
