New York City to Apply for ‘.nyc’ Web Domain

New York City officials announced yesterday that they're looking for private firms to help them apply to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to operate the .nyc domain.  ICANN recently changed its rules, allowing anyone to buy a top-level domain or Web address suffix like .nyc.

DotNYC LLC has been in talks with New York City to operate the domain and has estimated that the cost to have .nyc attached to the end of a Web site would be around $10, potentially generating millions a year from the domain.
