How NYC Theaters Request Cell Phones Be Turned Off

NYC theaters have come up with a variety of ways to encourage patrons, many of whom don't think that the announcements about cell phones apply to them, turn their mobile devices off, including:

  • Angela Landsbury's "exaggerated" formal instructions before Night Music;
  • The recorded voice of David Coverdale, of the band Whitesnake, at Rock of Ages, at the Brooks Atkinson, employing a few expletives and giving a shout-out to the hot babes in the house;
  • Reminder signs in the lobby of the Eugene O'Neill Theater where Fela! is playing; and,
  • The director of Our Town at the Barrow Street Theater, who played the Stage Manager in its first few months, making a show of putting his phone away.
