Business Insider has compiled a list of the 20 companies "doing something exciting," which has the people the Web site spoke to "excited." They include:
- Kickstarter, which allows artists and other creatives to fund their projects without giving up an equity stake in what they produce;
- Etsy, the marketplace for users to buy and sell homemade goods, vintage goods, and art supplies;
- Location-based social network Foursquare, which might be planning a new funding round;
- AppNexus, which lets advertisers monitor and alter their online campaigns "on the fly";
- SecondMarket, which is a "trading platform for illiquid assets";
- Stickybits, which is a "mobile app that lets people associate media with physical objects";
- Hunch, the "recommendation service" about which we've written before;
- Hot Potato, the "forum for realtime discussions" which helped users connect at SXSW Interactive;
- Boxee, which provides free software for viewing Web video on a television;
- Kikin, a browser plug-in which allows users to view related search results from other Web sites whenever you search for anything;
- Fluidinfo, which seeks to be a Wikipedia on "the scale of the Web itself," meaning that anything– people, companies, locations, products, etc.– can have an entry;
- OneWire, a job network entirely focused on the financial industry;
- Jack Dorsey's Square, which allows users to make credit-card payments from their mobile phones;
- AdSafe, which keeps online advertisers from having their advertisements appear next to "inappropriate or offensive content";
- MyNines, which aggregates offerings from sample sales;
- OMGPOP, a "casual gaming [Web] site";
- BuzzFeed, a "trends aggregator";
- Stackoverflow, a "collaboratively edited question and answer [Web] site for programmers";
- MakerBot, which makes "3D printers"; and,
- SpeakerText, which creates transcripts of YouTube clips.
