Silicon Alley VC Funding on the Rise in 2010

According to a recent report issued by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association, funding for New York area startup firms rose to $566 million in the first quarter of 2010, up 18.9% from the fourth quarter of 2009, and 32% year-over-year. Compared to Silicon Valley, New York funded 75 companies, as compared to the Valley's $1.5 billion in funding to 202 companies.  However, the Valley's funding dropped 21.4% from the fourth quarter of 2009, and deal volume dropped 24.6%.

In New York, first quarter VC funding was dominated by software deals, as 21 software firms received $125 million in funding, including analytics firm 101data Inc. and social networking service Foursquare.
