Gawker Advises Writers “Scandal Sells”

In an internal memo made public on the Village Voice website by blogger Foster Kamer, NY-based Gawker Media tells its writers how to make a bigger impact on the web. Among the advice given:

  • Scandal sells. "The staples of old yellow journalism are the staples of the new yellow journalism: sex, crime and, even better, sex crime."
  • Take advantage of pseudo-exclusive stories, stories with added content that have been repackaged.
  • Look for drama and stories where people triumph over adversity.
  • When remotely possible, turn news into explanation.
  • "Images can't be an afterthought."
  • Questions as headlines work well on the web.
