In a conversation with Internet Week Chairman David-Michel Davies, Expert Labs director Anil Dash discussed how his team helped the White House pioneer a revolutionary outreach program to generate ideas for "grand challenges," or ambitious science and technology projects that can capture the public's imagination and represent significant job-creation or educational opportunities.
In past eras, Dash said, presidents would have invited a half-dozen experts to a closed-door meeting to get such ideas. Using this open approach instead resulted in more than 2,000 responses on Facebook and Twitter and 700 e-mails, all within the first 48 hours.
