The New York Times information architect Jennifer Brook described the design decisions in developing the Editor's Choice iPad app, which has been roundly criticized for being limited in features and content. Speaking at Poynter's "The Power of the Tablet" conference, Brook made a case for an app that performs a few core functions extremely well and will be improved over time, a column on the Poynter web site says.
She also pointed out that some of the features the Times would like to implement mean system-wide changes. "We would love to have full-sized photos on the app, but you have to tell 300 producers that they now have to crop their photos," she said.
