Columbia Gives Engineers a Chance to Fix Journalism

In a NY Times Magazine essay, Nicholas Carlson discusses the importance of Columbia University's new master's degree in journalism and computer science. While many j-schools teach how to edit video and create rudimentary HTML, the goal of the Columbia program is to produce programmer/journalists who can design their own tools, or at least are able to see what technology can do for them.

Bill Grueskin, dean of academic affairs, says engineers will be attracted to the program because they want to be able to fix society's "intractable" problems, and the unhealthy state of journalism is definitely one of those problems.
