Brooklyn School Pioneers “Social Media For Kids”

After Principal Nadia Lopez of a Brooklyn middle school was injured in a fight that originated online, she teamed up with neighbors from Crown Heights to develop a 10-session course to educate her students on use of social networks.  The class, which teaches students to avoid cyberbullying and how to protect their privacy, has already seen popularity throughout the country.

Referencing the the recent Rutgers incident, Lopez stated that one of the biggest problems of social networking is “On the Internet, information is distributed in seconds and things escalate in seconds.”  Her hope is that students will be more careful after being made aware of the dangers of social media sites.
