Enough People Will Pay, New York Times’ Sulzberger Says

More details are coming out about the New York Times digital paywall, which will test consumer’s willingness to pay for news they expect to get for free. The Times is expected to sell an Internet-only subscription for unlimited Times access, as well as a broader digital package that bundles the Times online with its iPad app, the Wall Street Journal reported. The exact pricing is yet to be determined, but speculation abounds that the Times will charge $20/month for the bundle, and less for online only access.

Speaking at the opening session at Digital life Design, publisher Arthur Sulzburger said he believes enough people will pay for quality journalism offered by the metered service to make it a good business. According to VentureBeat, Sulzburger is encouraged about how newspapers can thrive in the digital world, saying that 80% of the Times advertisers have moved into digital advertising.
