Hewlett-Packard is the only tablet maker to give a big publisher the subscription terms it want. HP has agreed to let Time Warner‘s publishing unit provide subscriptions for Sport Illustrated, Time, Fortune and People on their new tablet, due this summer.
Though Time Inc. had planned to work with Apple’s iPad/iTunes, the plans fell apart and negotiations haven’t gone far since. The crucial sticking point was, according to Media Memo, control and access to subscribers’ billing information and other user data.
