Holocaust Records Moved from NY Warehouse to the Web

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee has been keeping historic papers and photos from the Holocaust in a NY warehouse and has finally moved the collection online.  The online database features over 500,000 names with more than 1,000 photographs, documenting the committee’s relief efforts during World War II and the postwar era in 24 countries.

For over a year, volunteers entered names into the database and scanned fragile documents into the computer.  Users can submit names of people they recognize in the photos or search for specific people.  Some of the people in the database include those who would become well known internationally speaking in later years, including Israeli prime minister, Menachem Begin and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel.
