Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen is the latest public official speaking out against Facebook’s new facial recognition technology, which automatically recognizes user’s faces and suggests their names when they appear in uploaded photos. Jepsen’s main complaint is that the new technology is on an opt-out basis only, meaning users might not be aware that the technology is affecting their information and privacy. Jepsen wrote in a statement, “Any system that automatically prompts tagging without such prior notice or consent threatens to expose many more individuals to unwelcome and unwitting disclosures of their images.”
The new feature was announced in December and began rolling out worldwide earlier this month. The Electronic Information Privacy Center and other privacy groups have already filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission concerning the automatic tagging.
