Google is preparing to launch its daily deals website Offers in NY and appears to be making promises merchants simply cannot refuse, and other websites, like Groupon, cannot compete with.  A merchant who signed up to provide deals through Offers told Business Insider that the Google salesperson offered them SEO benefits and the ability to become “No. 1 in Google.”

Claiming that the merchant misunderstood Google’s offer, Google spokesperson Nate Tyler said to Business Insider that, “Google Offers has no influence whatsoever on the ranking of Google search results.”  He was sure to differentiate between Google’s “organic search” results, which are not influenced by Google’s relationships with other companies, and their sponsored search links, which are offered to clients of their advertising products.

The allegations that Google is tying the purchase of Offers to their search rankings could trigger more investigations by the Federal Trade Commission.
