Rachel Sterne Cautious of NY Social Media Overreaching, Launches SMART

NY’s first chief digital officer, Rachel Sterne, has been working to to improve the city’s use of technology and digital media since her appointment began in January, but it has yet to be clear if her efforts have been successful.  She has overhauled city agencies’ use of social media, increasing the number of feeds to more than 200.  In a recent interview with Fast Company, Sterne said that while encouraging agencies to create Twitter feeds or YouTube accounts to better reach their constituents, she is cautious of overreaching.

Sterne said a lot of time and resources must be put towards the new social media channels to make them successful and that many agency members have taken on the responsibility of creating and managing them on top of their other duties.  To guide them, NY recently launched the Social Media Advisory Research Taskforce (SMART) to help agencies making the transition into digital.  “It’s important to look at social media just as you would any other channel:  It needs to be done correctly and strategically.  The truth is you have to look at it like any other investment,” she said.
