Skype is set to acquire NY-based group messaging service GroupMe, which had raised $850,000 in a round of financing from Betaworks, SV Angel, First Round Capital, Lerer Ventures , and others, after a TechCrunch Disrupt hackathon in 2010. This year the company raised $10.6 million from Khosla Ventures, General Catlyst and previous investors.

GroupMe is a service that allows creating on the fly private phone groups with others, sending them texts and setting up free conference calls. Skype has been talking to the company while talks of Skype being acquired by Microsoft were also happening. GroupMe will remain as a standalone brand.
