For book lovers, a futuristic mobile library might just grab your attention at Lower Manhattan’s New Amsterdam Market. Known as the Uni, this outdoor library consists of 144 detachable cubbies that can contort into a multitude of configurations, offering free-to-read books for children and adults alike, according to DNAInfo.com. Leslie and Sam Davol, the Uni’s creators,  were inspired by the impact on the daily lives of Bostonians, after developing their first pop-up library in Boston’s Chinatown.

According to DNAinfo.com, the Uni features hundreds of cone-shaped covers for removable book-filled cubbyholes that can be made into benches and tables. Its design is durable and will protect against inclement weather conditions.

Architecture firm Höweler + Yoon designed the portable library with help from MIT students and were able to generate $20,882 via NY fundraising website Kickstarter. The Uni premiered this past weekend at the market, with its next stop to be at The Brooklyn Book Festival and will continue with its tour around NY, where it will remain indefinitely.
