Beginning tomorrow, a new pilot program involving AT&T, T-Mobile and the MTA will be put into effect to add its cellular service to a handful of subway platforms.  For this pilot program, stations that run along 14th Street (stations from the A, C, E, F, L, M,  1, 2 and 3 lines) will gain cell phones reception, along with 23rd Street line as part of the C and E coverage.

The MTA expects all 277 underground platforms to be equipped  by 2016, while Transit Wireless, the company working on this project, is “said to be in talks with Sprint and Verizon for a similar introduction,” according to Endgadget.
