Etsy, the Brooklyn based e-commerce site specializing in handcrafted and vintage products, has skyrocketed into the online world with more than 11 million users and 1.1 billion page views a month. The site has joined forces with Splunk, a provider of real-time operational intelligence that manages and analyzes data to illustrate its data volumes. Etsy’s usage of Splunk has moved from a focus on troubleshooting to a zeroing in on operational data. Splunk is able to monitor traffic patters in real time to find out problems why visitors may leave the site.
Etsy also uses Hadoop as another data solution to analyze internal and external operation data and activity to examine customer behavior. Currently, Hadoop monitors the “Taste Test” feature on Etsy’s site to figure out what products best fit a customers need. According to Giga Om, “Operationally, Hadoop helps Etsy analyze server logs to figure out what customers are doing on the site and how they’re accessing it.”
