Appssavvy, an NY-based online ad startup, has raised a total of $7.1 million in its latest funding round from AOL Ventures and previous backers such as The New York Times, and About.com founder Scott Kurnit. The company describes its venture as an “adtivity” platform, in that it steers clear away from display ads that are measured in page views. Partnering with Disney and OMGPOP, both social game publishers, the ads pop out at opportune moments during the play time in order to not interrupt user experience.

According to Adweek, “As a result, [CEO Chris] Cunningham says Appssavvy opens up new ad inventory, where brands can reach a targeted, highly engaged audience.” Thus far, American Express, Chase and Coca-Cola have been running campaigns such as these. The company’s ultimate goal is to go beyond gaming.
