“The story of online dating has become about algorithms and not about having fun with people online,” Sean Mills, the chief executive of NY-based dating site Nerve, told Bits. “We’re moving away from the algorithm era into the social era. This is a dating site that reflects how the Web has changed.”

The site, which in its earlier incarnation was one of the Web’s earliest dating sites Nerve Personals, examined the interactions based around status updates and minireports of people’s daily lives via Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr to design Nerve Dating, according to Bits. It is the company’s objective to use those parcels of information as the natural icebreakers for people ready to date and already familiar with the format of social networking sites.

The service’s basic features are free, such as browsing and answering questions, but if they want to contact a potential date, they’ll have to subscribe for a $20 a month fee. The fee is meant to diminish the level of “creepiness” and “flakiness” that many online daters encounter with other services, Mills told Bits.
