According to the AP, NY state police issued 816 tickets over the recent Thanksgiving holiday weekend for people who were driving while texting on their mobile phones. According to the state, 330 of the tickets “were a direct result of tougher enforcement of “Operation Hang-Up,” which was partially paid for by a federal grant.
Originally considered a secondary offense in NY state, in July the texting law became a primary offense. Since that time, at least 1,000 tickets have been issued a month, compared to 430 tickets issued a month before the change in the law.
