Katherine Johnson, a NYer who has a 10 year old son at P.S. 51, recently created the app, Safer Bus, along with fellow parent, Jared Alessandroni. She made the app in response to her panic after the school bus had arrived a half hour late at the beginning of the school year.
The app allows parents to track their child while riding on the school bus. This is done by the bus driver scanning a barcode on a personalized student card, usually with an iPad, or by checking student in and out through a virtual checklist. The information then gets sent to the parent using the free app via GPS location featured on the device, giving them up-to-the-minute tracking for the duration that the child is on the bus.
According to DNAinfo, Johnson and Alessandroni are currently working towards convincing the Department of Education to pilot the program at P.S. 51 and possibly other schools. P.S. 51, which has 300 students traveling via school bus every day, would have to buy iPads at around $629, for each of their 5 buses. Amboy, the company which runs the buses for P.S. 51, has yet to comment on the initiative.
