BetaBeat is reporting that an e-mail sent out today to  The New York Times’ registered users’ list from nytimes@email.newyorktimes.com is spam. The e-mail explained to subscribers that they recently cancelled their at home print delivery and encouraged them to call a specific number in order to continue their NY Times subscription (Editor’s Note:  NYConvergence also was a recipient of this spam email.  We’re still searching for our phantom print subscription).

In addition, the IP address has been traced by several to the marketing firm, Epsilon, that also fell victim to a hacker last year.  After an initial investigation by the Times, however,  it seems that the emails were not the result of a hack, but was a legitimate email from the Times that was meant to go to 300 people, not over 8 million, according to a tweet from Amy Chozick, a corporate media reporter for the Times.

UPDATE:  Here is the full story on the Times’ email from Chozick.
