NY-based Time Warner Cable has launched a free app that allows subscribers to program their DVR and check TV listings. In addition, the app lets users with any Android tablet as their remote control. Currently, the app is available to ”all customers with set-top boxes or DVRs running the Time Warner Cable “Navigator” interactive program guide,” according to Broadcasting and Cable.
The app does not, however, show living TV programming.

I am surprised it has taken TWC so long to release their app for Android, and it is not able to perform like the app they released for their iPad users. Despite the fact that their app is an over glorified remote control, it can only allow iPad users to watch a limited amount of live TV. The DISH Remote Access app I have been using for a while on both my Android and iPad2 not only functions as my remote while I am away from home, but it also turns my mobile devices into mobile TV’s. Anywhere I have access to Wi-Fi or mobile 3G network I can watch the entire LIVE TV channel lineup that I subscribe to through DISH Network, and I can watch my whole DVR collection. Since I work for DISH, I know that consumers are embracing TV everywhere, but I honestly do not expect any of TWC’s subscribers to be too elated about their new app.
