Burnham: #SOPA Threatens NY Tech Industry

Writing for Metro Focus, Brad Burnham, says the Stop Online Piracy Act poses a threat to the NY tech Industry. The co-founder of Union Square Ventures says SOPA will alter the way businesses create services. Instead of creating a “healthy and profitable relationship with their users” businesses will end up suing them.

Burnham claims SOPA is the wrong way to stop people from illegally downloading web content. He cites the ideas of Joi Ito, head of MIT’s Media Lab, who describes the Internet as a “belief system.”

More than just a series of pipes, Burnham writes that the web’s core architecture is designed to empower people and not control them. Companies like Twitter, Kickstarter, eBay, Etsy are meeting places where consumers do business, share content and ideas. The design of these companies facilitates sharing and empowers good behavior.

But the spirit of SOPA doesn’t share this view of human nature. “The legislation the content industry is currently pushing through Congress, will not allow me to architect a service and build a relationship with consumers that reflects my core beliefs about human nature,” he said.
