NY startup Turntable.fm allows friends to listen to music and has big public rooms where strangers can listen to others’ favorite music. But not long after, Facebook partnered with Spotify, Rdio and others, enabling users to share musical preferences with friends. As a result of this, late last week Facebook launched Listen With, which allows Facebook users to go back and play songs on their own. Facebook’s Listen With only works with friends. An intimate chat triggers notifications where friends can discuss the music.
Turntable.fm co-founder Billy Chasen said he’s flattered that Facebook was inspired by his company. He told TechCrunch, “I look forward to seeing how they interpret what social music means as we seem to have different core philosophies about it (such as the importance of discovering new music from strangers and not just friends).”
TechCrunch says Turntable.fm will have to ramp up its features, possibly by courting celebrity DJs and charity DJ battles. It could also improve the users’ experience by categorizing rooms by genre, mood or average beats per minute. That way, Turntable will be a fresh desination.
