Helen Gurley Brown, the long-time editor of Cosmopolitan Magazine, has donated $30 million to Columbia University’s School of Journalism and Stanford University’s engineering school. The two schools will form an institute for media innovation named after Gurley Brown and her late husband, David Brown.

Both schools will receive $12 million and Columbia will get an additional $6 million to construct a “signature space” next to the current graduate school.

In a statement, Gurley Brown said, “Great content needs usable technology. Sharing a language is where the magic happens. It’s time for two great American institutions on the east and west coasts to build a bridge.”

According to The Wrap, the gift is the largest ever to Columbia’s journalism school. In a statement, Nicholas Lemann, dean of Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism, called the donation “transformational.”

Gurley Brown, almost 90, was Cosmo’s editor for more than 30 years. Her husband, a graduate of Stanford and the Columbia, produced the films “The Sting,” “Jaws” and “A Few Good Men.”
