According to City Room, Joseph Lhota, MTA Chairman, is “fully committed to moving to the smart-card program.”
Lhota said that lawmakers asked why the MTA wants to transition to the smart-card technology. He said the current MetroCards are considered obsolete. Smart cards are waved in front of sensors instead of swiped. Riders can add money to their accounts by credit or debit cards, often through a Web site. The cards would eliminate turnstile problems where customers have trouble swiping. The technology could also register different fares at different times of day.
Jeremy Soffin, a MTA spokesperson, said the authority had not changed any plants to install the system. A pilot program is in the works and funding has been earmarked in the capital budget.
