ABC television and NBCUniversal are revealing new programming on taxicab TVs. But, as Crain’s New York Business notes, the significant changes are occurring outside the city, as both media companies expand their national out-of-home presence with new technology partners.

NBC announced a deal last month with pay services giant VeriFone Systems Inc. to put content from its local stations, NBC Sports and its cable channels onto more than 1 million screens nationwide, according to Crain’s NY Business. Most of those will be tiny screens at point-of-sale credit-card swipes. There will also be screens in 60,000 gas stations and in the backs of 12,000 taxis, including 6,800 yellow cabs in New York.

ABC, partnering with Long Island City, Queens-based Creative Mobile Technologies, will put local Eyewitness News briefs into 10,000 cabs around the country, including 6,600 New York City cabs, according to Crain’s NY Business.

The new partnerships indicate a step up in a business that began five years ago as a promotional tool, but now carries new importance as local station revenues have been stifled by competition from the Web, Crain’s NY Business asserts.
