Students of the future Software Engineering Academy, the new high school that Mayor Bloomberg announced will be opening this fal in NY, have Mike Zemansky to thank. The school, which will be located in Union Square, was Zamansky’s idea. A computer science teacher a Stuyvesant High School, he campaigned long and hard for more thorough software training for his students.
BetaBeat reports that back in 2003, Zemansky told the Stuyvesant Spectator that “a large number of students who are exposed to computer science at Stuy go onto pursue a career in that field.”
The Mayor brought both Fred Wilson and Zamansky on stage to make the announcement. The mayor indicated that the school would be supported by Wilson, and that Bloomberg L.P. is also a sponsor—and will hire students as interns. Mayor Bloomberg also said that over the next two years, the city is opening at least a dozen new Career and Technical Education schools and programs where students will have internships tailored to their coursework and interests.
