Will Cablevision Get a Union?

The New York Times took a look recently at attempts by cable installers to bring a union to Bethpage, Long Island-based Cablevision, as the Communications Workers of America is attempting to represent the installers. The Times profiled some of the installers, who have signed on for the union card. The vote will be Jan. 26.

Cablevision is putting up strong opposition. It has hired a premier anti-union law firm and began an internal website called “Why Union Free.” The company also required its 285 Brooklyn employees to attend anti-union meetings. Cablevision workers make between $25,000 and $55,000, but their Verizon competitors, who have union representation, make at least a third more, The Times said.
