CEO Dennis Crowley said Foursquare users are evolving from just checking in to unlock points and badges to discovering new places. Using its “Explore on the Web” feature, users can find out about businesses in their own neighborhoods or places they’ve never explored.
Foursquare is about to turn three. The NY startup has 15 million users and more than 100 employees. Crowley told Read Write Web that Foursquare is in the process of redesigning their mobile app for a broader audience. It’s also disassembling their product and figuring out how their data can be used.
Foursquare wants to monetize its app, but not in a way that’s intrusive or feels like advertising. Instead, they want customers to receive a tangible benefit, like special treatment or saving money. Crowley says that anywhere there are maps, they should have Foursquare dots on them. The dots could represent anything—from where your friends are, where your car is parked or the five things you need to do in the neighborhood.
