Armonk, NY-based IBM has been accumulating what it calls a “Smarter Commerce” portfolio, creating a centralized consumer feedback apparatus valued at $20 billion, a post by Patrick Gallagher on Westfair Online said. The company is now working with more than 2000 businesses worldwide, to provide a cloud/software combination that lets retailers analyze their customer’s spending behaviors and demands.

IBM began the initiative after witnessing the struggles of retailers and service providers to address evolving consumer demand, the post said.  The company also experienced the problem in its own business. During 2010 and 2011, IBM spent more than $5.5 billion to acquire companies that have expertise in sales, marketing and analytics.

In February, IBM acquired Emptoris Inc., a cloud-based analytics company that specializes in procurement and supply chain operations, putting together another piece of the puzzle.
