IBM’s Watson is officially getting off of the game show stage and into the big data analytics business. The natural language-based machine, which beat its human competitors on Jeopardy, will be in beta at WellPoint,  an Indianapolis-based insurance company.  Armonk, NY-based IBM has more beta customers lined up in the next few months.

While there’s no word on what WellPoint will use the system for, IBM says that financial services firms could use Watson to sift through news reports and market research to find likely acquisition targets. Since most companies are just starting to deploy “big data” projects and aren’t ready for a heavy-duty analytics engine like Watson, IBM is rolling out a “ready for Watson” program, to get companies started.
