Tumblr CEO David Karp said NY’s tech sector has a different ‘flavor’ than Boston or California. The flavor, he told Capital New York, “tends to be very design-centric and very media-centric. New York continues to really excel in that sort of stuff because, again, we’re just so steeped in it.”

Karp spoke after a press conference held at Tumblr late last week where Mayor Bloomberg announced four new official NYCGov social media channels and the appointment of Daniel P. Huttenlocher as the founding dean of the new CornellNYC Tech campus.

Bloomberg said that the campus is expected to spin out 600 new companies over the next three decades—creating about 30,000 jobs. “It is our hope and expectation that these new companies will join the Tumblrs and Foursquares of our city, bolstering our reputation as the center of innovation and propelling us past Silicon Valley as the capital of digital technology,” the Mayor said.

Karp doesn’t think Silicon Valley will fade away anytime soon. Technologists who spend a lot of time California come back and say that it feels like the future other there and that anything is possible, he said. People are obsessive social media users and they are building stuff all of the time.

“I think it fragments more than it does suddenly shift over to the East Coast,” he told Capital New York.
