Will Taxi Commission Replace TV with Tablets?

The New York Taxi and Limousine Commission is considering a proposal to replace 50 televisions in cabs with embedded tablet computers provided by Square, a mobile payment company founded by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey.  Chairman David Yassky told The New York Times that the technology would open up opportunities to provide riders with a variety of content and computer applications, as well as the ability to swipe credit cards any time in the trip.

Taxi TV is now currently run by Verifone Media and Creative Mobile Technologies, who provide a mix of news and  entertainment from NBC and ABC. Yassky told The Times that he hoped a new competitor would reduce the price of credit card transactions to the taxi owner. Square will make a formal presentation to the Taxi Commission March. 1.
