Though Turner and CBS own the rights for broadcasting March Madness games, mobile sites and apps are a different market entirely. According to consumer market research firm NPD, Bristol, Connecticut-based ESPN was the most popular mobile site for the tournament, followed but NCAA site and Yahoo Sports. In addition, ESPN apps such as ESPN Score Center and ESPN Bracket Bound also outperformed CBS Sports, ScoreMobile and NCAA March Madness Live.¬† According to MediaPost, these findings are based solely on Android usage, as NPD’s SmartMeter¬†does not yet have a method for tracking on iPhones.

Also, comScore stats for March 15 revealed that sport-related traffic increased 94% and 83% on tablets and smartphones, respectively.
