Speech recognition software has been around since the 1980s, but the integration of smart phones, statistical voice data, and cloud computing along with the existing application has allowed the technology to become revolutionary, e.g. iPhone’s SIRI.

In its most simplistic form, the user’s words and sentences are sent to a server, whereby data is used to better recognize the speech, and subsequently the answer to the query is sent back to the user’s device.

At the recent February 29th “Money Speaks” event by the iBreakfast Group, Daniel Ziv, VP of Verint; Heath Ahrens, CEO of iSpeech; Amy Neustein, Editor of Springer Series in Speech Tech; spoke about this technology. iSpeech helps developers add voice interaction features to apps, while Verint monitors client’s customer assistance calls and assesses them based on speech contexts. According to Neustein, it is possible to determine mood of the caller simply based on data from the speech recognition software.
