In case local fans missed yesterday’s Mets opening  game or can’t catch the Yankees season opener taking place this afternoon against the  Tampa Bay Rays, local fans of both teams can watch high-def baseball–whenever they want, as Verizon announced this week that NY-area FiOS TV subscribers have free access to the two teams’ games in HD and on demand.

Separate agreements with YES Network and SNY allow Verizon area subscribers to access the games from the “FiOS 1 Local Zone” folder in the free “Video on Demand” category on their on digital dashboard. Only FiOS subscribers in NY, Long Island, northern suburbs, the mid-Hudson area and northern and central New Jersey have access.

Area subscribers can also access other YES Network and SNY programming in HD.

Orlando Martinez, Verizon director of FiOS1 sports content, said  in a statement to NY Convergence that sports programs—especially games—are important to their customers.

“Our subscribers can’t get enough of the hometown Yankees and Mets,” Martinez said.  “By giving them the ability to watch our crystal-clear, high-definition broadcasts of their favorite baseball teams on their own time, or as a replay, we’re providing more entertainment value and greater choice.”

Verizon has broadcast the games in Single Definition for the past four years.
