City Council Passes Resolution for Village Voice to Axe Adult Ads

On Monday, the NY City Council voted on a resolution calling on Village Voice Media (VVM) to cease publishing the adult-services section in Backpage.com.

Christine Quinn, council speaker, said, “Village Voice Media needs to do all it can, immediately, to stop facilitating the crime of sex trafficking, which is why we’re calling on them to stop accepting adult advertisements on their Backpage.com website.”

According to Capital NY, the publisher claims that it is already taking action and doing “all it can…to stop facilitating the crime of sex trafficking.”  They state that they are already cooperating with law enforcement and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, bu they feel that the removal of the site would just make it more difficult to track down sex-trafficking perpetrators.

Councilman Brad Lander insists that “The Village Voice should do the right thing and stop profiting from sex trafficking.”
