This week Groupon acquired Breadcrumb, a NY-based point of sale startup that works with restaurants and hospitality companies. The amount of the deal was not released, but according to Reuters, Groupon’s VP of mobile, Mihir Shah, wrote that the company is excited to help “build affordable and intuitive products that make it easier for local merchants to manage their business.”

Breadcrumb runs its point of sale (POS) system with iOS apps, which keeps costs lower because businesses can forgo buying expensive cash register equipment, while also managing a customer’s order at a restaurant from start to finish. Reuters reported that Breadcrumb also offers a time clock, a scheduling program, and payroll tools all for managing employees, as well as using analytics to measure costs and customer information.

There has been speculation over exactly how Groupon will utilize Breadcrumb’s features, but the company has hinted that it will integrate its own deals into the system. However, Groupon’s new daily deals site has been testing mobile payment and may use Breadcrumb to heighten this service.
