Jim Windolf, a writer for Vanity Fair and former editor at the New York Observer, is now working on Punch!, an iPad publication backed by $2.25 million in seed funding. According to Capital New York, for inspiration, Windolf is looking back at the success of the 80′s magazine Spy. Though fairly short-lived and ultimately unprofitable, its design changed the experience of magazine reading, albeit within the limits of a print magazine.
Now, with audiences used to the disintermediated structure of online content, and the iOS platform offering a wide array of interactive design options, Punch! is hoping to ricochet off of Spy’s editorial and design legacy into the 21st century.
