For customers sick of stuffing their wallets with ‘buy ten get one free’ cards, new tech startups have created a digital and more personalized version. Belly just entered NY and creates customized rewards for participating merchants. One example is an app version of the typical rewards card, where eating at a restaurant ten times earns the customer a free gelato. However, Belly allows for a more personalized approach such as Bagelsmith in Brooklyn, where a customer who earns 75,000 points, can arm wrestle the owner for a percentage of the business.

LocalBonus, based in Koreatown section of Midtown, lets shoppers earn cash back at participating merchants just by using their credit or debit cards. Though this has some subscribers nervous to give out their information, LocalBonus told the New York Daily News that it uses bank-grade data security to protect shoppers’ personal data.

Companies like Belly and LocalBonus are piggybacking on the success of such sites as Groupon, which according to the Daily News, some feel falls short in the small business department.
