AOL has decided to shut down its news site AOL News just as they launched this week their iPad app Huffington. According to Adweek, AOL News used to surpass The Huffington Post’s web traffic with 9 million unique viewers a month, but now will be consolidating its news efforts into HuffPost, rather than competing with it.
For those who have contributed to AOL News over the years, their content is now wiped from the web. There is an ongoing effort to retrieve this content and make it available to the original offers, but this move, according to Adweek, may suggest that the loss of old AOL content was an unanticipated consequence to pulling the plug on the site.
