In the last few weeks Google and Apple have announced they will be using military grade spy planes to photograph locations around the country and publish them online, through their respective mapping software. NY Senator Charles Schumer told NY1′s Bree Driscoll that this new technology will be so precise it can recognize individual faces from 10,000 feet up. Schumer has asked the companies to make some concessions such as notifying communities prior to the mapping, blurring individuals, allowing opt out, and blurring sensitive infrastructure details for security purposes.
Though Apple did not comment, representatives at Google have agreed to meet with Schumer to demonstrate how they feel the imagery is no different from what is already available and will not cause a new security concern.
