This fall, 100 high school students will inaugurate Mayor Bloomberg’s new initiative to promote NY as an incubator for new technology. The Academy for Software Engineering, opening near Union Square and partly bankrolled by NY VC Fred Wilson, will train high school kids in computers and cutting-edge technology and help them score coveted internships with innovative tech firms.
According to the New York Daily News, this will only be the first of several “baby genius schools” opening around the city. 800 kids applied for the initial lottery, and according to Deputy Mayor Robert Steel, the goal is “to give thousands more students the opportunity to learn a skill set that is only increasing in importance.”
